NORTH WEST

Mmabana String Project

This is a most successful project at SAMET, which has become our model of what we want to achieve. It is a five day program, which means more contact time with the learners.

The project has two programs running concurrently. We have the primary program for new aspiring musicians and the secondary program which is called learner ship for our future music educators.

In the leaner ship program we have manage to fast track students in the space of three (3) to four (4) years through Trinity House Exams to reach the level of grade 7/8 playing standard. Very high pressure program. Already two students have been identified to be part of the cadet program at the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra in the year 2007. The other graduates will be deployed within the North West where we intend opening projects at places such as Taung, Potchefstroom and Lehurutse. From students to being employees at SAMET!!!!!!!!

The high competence standard of playing at this project has afforded them the opportunities of playing professional gigs for cooperate and government functions. The highlight for these youngsters have been being the string section of the 'UMZANSI SINGS' the production that was in honor of OR.Tambo under the director ship of one of South Africa's musicians and composer Victor Ntoni.

Itumeleng Monamodi has passed both violin and viola grade 7 Trinity exams with distinction in October 2005.

In the year 2006 eighty three (83) students are registered at this project.

The following are the tutors at Mmabana;

1. Nkoshilo Matlhatsi
2. Ion Ignut

Thanks to Mmabana for their continued support of housing the project.
