WHAT
IS SAMET?
The South African
Music Education Trust (SAMET) currently brings empowerment and employment
in arts and culture, through its 7 music education projects, countrywide,
to 60 music teachers, 3000 students, and 44 project committee workers in
the 7 disadvantaged communities in which it works.
In the words of Ronnie Samaai, project leader of the Redefine
Western Cape Music Education Project in Kuils River, which draws its
students from Khayalitsha and Guguletu, "...this music education
project has had a profound effect on the lives of our students who had no
previous access to arts and culture of any kind. Their parents and school
teachers confirm that they are performance driven, have more confidence in
themselves and their attitude to life has undergone a dramatic
change."
International Trustee, Lord Menuhin's "Violins for Africa"
project has brought over 100 violins from diverse parts of the world to
our poorer communities.
SAMET is partially funded by Government, but has also raised
sponsorship from 22 corporations and individuals.
Key areas being addressed are teacher upgrading, music literacy, education
and performance enhancement, leading to the creation of opportunities
within the music profession. SAMET Trustees perceive the vital areas of
arts and culture as bridge builders, the elevators of human dignity, and a
powerful means of economic independence.
Areas of project operations include: Alexandra Township, Kuils River,
Nyanga, Guguletu, Khayalitsha, Ga-Rankuwa, Lanseria, Mafikeng, Taung,
Lehurutshe, Kimberly, Umlazi, Nelspruit and Soweto.
The SAMET Trustees endorse transparency, non-racism and non-sexism
and Audited Financial Statements are available for funders or sponsors at
all times.
